### Harai Goshi
Harai Goshi, also known as "Sweeping Hip Throw," is a highly effective judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu throw. It is typically executed from a standing position and can seamlessly transition into groundwork after the throw.
### Position
- **Position**: Standing
- **Top or Bottom**: Top
### Japanese Name
- **Japanese Name**: Harai Goshi
### Steps to Execute Harai Goshi
1. **Grip Setup**
- Start in a standing position, facing your opponent.
- Secure a grip on your opponent's collar with your right hand, ensuring a strong connection to control their upper body.
- With your left hand, grip your opponent's right sleeve close to the elbow.
2. **Off-Balancing**
- Begin by pulling your opponent slightly forward and towards your right, creating an imbalance. Your goal is to disrupt their posture and control their center of gravity.
3. **Positioning**
- Simultaneously, step in with your right foot, placing it close to your opponent's base (between or slightly outside their legs) as you pivot on your left foot.
- Your back should face your opponent, and your right hip should be aligned with their midsection.
4. **Execute the Throw**
- Transfer your weight onto your right leg. Sweep your left leg in a wide arc, from inside to outside, toward the outside of your opponent's right leg.
- The sweeping leg should contact low on their calf to maximize leverage.
5. **Hips and Upper Body**
- Use your hips as a pivot point. Drive them into your opponent's lower torso as you rotate.
- As your legs execute the sweep, utilize the grips to control their upper body and maintain balance.
6. **Complete the Throw**
- As the opponent's balance is compromised, continue the rotation and leverage. The combination of the sweeping leg, hip placement, and upper body control should generate enough momentum to flip the opponent over your hip and onto the ground.
7. **Follow Through**
- Follow your opponent down to the mat, maintaining control. You can transition into side control or other dominant positions to continue your attack from the ground.
### Tips:
- **Timing and Fluidity**: The success of Harai Goshi relies heavily on timing and fluid motion. Practice the motion in a continuous and smooth flow rather than in segmented steps.
- **Hips are Key**: Use your hips efficiently to power the throw. They should come in close contact with your opponent's torso.
- **Maintain Grips**: Maintain control of your grips throughout the technique for control during the transition to groundwork.
Harai Goshi is a fundamental yet advanced technique that combines balance, timing, and leverage to address an opponent's upright stance, offering continued control post-throw.
