## Technique: Duck Under
### Position: Standing
The **Duck Under** technique is a dynamic movement used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to move from a standing position to a dominant position behind your opponent. This technique capitalizes on your opponent's forward pressure and can transition into a takedown or back control.
### Steps to Perform the Duck Under:
1. **Establish Initial Grip and Stance**
- Begin in a standing position facing your opponent. Use a standard collar tie with one hand gripping behind your opponent's neck and the other hand controlling the opponent's wrist or forearm.
2. **Create an Off-Balance**
- Use your grip to create pressure and off-balance your opponent. Pull down with your collar tie while pushing or snapping the opponent’s wrist towards their hip. This forces the opponent to lean more into you, making them easier to maneuver.
3. **Initiate the Duck Under**
- Lower your own level by bending your knees and dropping your hips slightly. At the same time, release the grip on your opponent's wrist and the collar tie.
- Slip your inside arm (the arm closest to their body) beneath their arm while rotating your body to the side.
4. **Executing the Duck**
- As you slip under their arm, continue turning towards the backside of your opponent. Your head should now slip under or slightly beside their arm while guiding it upwards with your own.
5. **Reestablish Back Control**
- Once you’re behind your opponent, circle around quickly to maintain the rear position. You can establish a body lock for better control.
- Maintain posture and avoid overcommitting your weight to prevent counter sweeps or reversals.
6. **Transition to Takedown or Back Control**
- **Option 1:** Use the body lock to pull the opponent backwards while stepping back or tripping their feet as you take them to the ground.
- **Option 2:** If they stay standing, maintain back control by establishing hooks or transitioning to another standing control position, such as an arm drag or Russian tie.
### Tips for Successful Execution:
- **Timing and Quickness:** The duck under relies heavily on timing and should be performed quickly to capitalize on the momentary off-balance.
- **Keep Head Low:** Keeping your head low is crucial to avoid getting caught in a counter grip or choke.
- **Maintain Constant Contact:** Even though you’re slipping under, maintain light contact for navigational feedback.
### Practice Drill:
1. **Partner drill** where each person practices the duck under for a set time, focusing on fluid movements and ensuring solid position behind the opponent. Rotate partners to experience different grips and levels of resistance.
By refining the Duck Under, practitioners can enhance their ability to transition to dominant positions effectively and efficiently.
