### Arm Drag Technique **Positions Used From:** - Standing - Butterfly Guard - Open Guard **Japanese Name:** N/A **Step-by-Step Instructions:** #### Standing Setup: 1. **Stance Preparation:** - Begin in your standard grappling stance with a slight bend in your knees and stand facing your opponent. - Maintain a balanced, athletic posture. 2. **Grip Establishment:** - With your left hand, reach for your opponent's opposite-side wrist (in this case, their right wrist). - Simultaneously, your right hand reaches across to grip the back of their tricep on the same arm. 3. **Initiating the Drag:** - Use the grip on their tricep to pull their arm across your body in a sweeping motion. - Simultaneously, step your left leg to the side or slightly behind you, creating an angle to your opponent. 4. **Execution of Arm Drag:** - As you complete the drag, continue to pull them forward and to the side, using their momentum against them. - Duck your head under their arm to move to the outside position. 5. **Taking the Back or Off-balancing:** - As you move to their back, place your chest close to their shoulder blades. - Extend your left arm around their waist or back. Use this opportunity to take their back. - Optional: Use this off-balancing to immediately transition into a takedown. #### From Butterfly Guard: 1. **Butterfly Position:** - Sit in a butterfly position with both legs open and knees slightly bent. - Keep your feet on the inside of your opponent's thighs. 2. **Secure the Grip:** - With your left hand, grab their right wrist, and with your right hand, secure their right tricep. 3. **Pull and Push:** - Pull their right arm across your body while simultaneously pushing off with your left leg. 4. **Sweep and Move:** - Use the leverage from your legs combined with the arm drag to off-balance them. - As they fall forward, use your hips to elevate and sweep, setting up to take the back or end in a dominant position. ### Key Points - Always maintain a firm grip and control throughout the drag. - Use quick and coordinated movements to execute the technique effectively. - Ensure you keep your balance and focus on using leverage rather than upper body strength alone. By mastering the arm drag, you can efficiently off-balance opponents, set up various takedowns, or transition into advantageous positions such as the back mount or side control.
