### **Introduction** The Pendulum Sweep, also known as the Flower Sweep, is a classic sweeping technique often executed from the closed guard position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It's particularly effective for practitioners with longer legs and can be an excellent method to transition from a defensive position to mount. ### **Japanese Name** N/A ### **Position** - **Closed Guard** ### **Technique Execution** 1. **Establish the Closed Guard** - Start in the closed guard position with your legs locked around your opponent's waist. - Keep your opponent close, controlling their posture using a collar tie or grips on their sleeves. 2. **Secure the Arm and Shoulder** - Reach over and grab your opponent's sleeve or wrist with your opposite hand (e.g., if targeting their right arm, use your left hand). - Pull their arm across your body, aiming to break their posture slightly. 3. **Control the Collar** - Use your free hand to grab deep into the opponent's collar (if in a gi) or secure behind their neck for better control. - This grip helps you control their upper body and redirect their balance. 4. **Unlock the Guard** - Open your guard by unlocking your feet, but maintain control of your opponent's posture. - Keep your legs tight against the opponent's sides. 5. **Swing your Leg for Momentum** - Use your leg on the same side as the sleeve grip to swing out wide. - This movement should create momentum and unbalance your opponent. Think of this motion as similar to a swinging pendulum. 6. **Trap the Leg or Hip** - As your swinging leg returns, use your opposite leg to hook under their hamstring or hip. - This hook is essential for destabilizing your opponent and executing the sweep. 7. **Push and Pull** - Pull strongly with your sleeve grip while simultaneously pushing with the collar grip. - The combined action should roll your opponent over the trapped leg and onto their back. 8. **Follow Through to Mount** - As your opponent tips over, maintain your grips and pressure. - Follow the momentum and smoothly transition to the mount position. 9. **Secure the Mount** - Once in mount, focus on maintaining position and stabilizing your posture before advancing to submissions or point scoring. ### **Tips for Success** - Timing and momentum are critical. The movement of your leg acting as a pendulum should be smooth and fluid. - It’s crucial to maintain strong grips and redirection of your opponent's balance with confidence. - Combine this sweep with a series of attacks and sweeps from the guard to increase your chance of success.
