### Loop Choke Technique The Loop Choke is a versatile submission in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, effective and adaptable when an opponent's head posture is low. It can be initiated from several positions, notably from the **Closed Guard**, **Open Guard**, or even when **Standing**. The technique employs the use of the opponent's gi to cut off blood flow to the carotid arteries, similar to a collar choke. #### **Step-by-Step Instructions** --- ##### **Position: Closed Guard/Open Guard** 1. **Set-Up** - Begin in the guard. Maintain wrist or collar grips to control their posture. - Use your legs to pull and break the opponent's posture if they are sitting too upright. 2. **Collar Grip** - Secure a deep grip on one side of your opponent's collar with your dominant hand. Ideally, your thumb should be on the inside, and fingers on the outside. 3. **Head Control** - Guide their head down towards your shoulder on the side you have the collar grip. Your arm should be close to your elbow, snugly across the back of their neck. 4. **Loop Arm Around Neck** - While pulling down on the collar, slide your forearm across their neck. Think of creating a "loop" with your arm. 5. **Breaking Balance** - Use your free hand to control the opponent’s far sleeve or wrist, keeping them from defending the choke. - Adjust your hips if necessary to maintain control. 6. **Finish the Choke** - To apply pressure, rotate your body away from their head as if pulling them into a spiral downwards motion. - Curl your wrist upwards to tighten the choke. - **Note:** Ensure your elbow controlling their neck remains elevated to keep the choke tight. 7. **Execute Patience & Adjustments** - Observe their defenses and adjust your grip or positioning as needed. Don't rush landings. ##### **Position: Standing Variant** 1. **Engage** - With a clinch or by pulling guard, as soon as the opponent's head dips forward, grab the collar. 2. **Application** - Use similar steps to get your forearm wrapped around the neck and rotate to finish. --- #### **Tips** - **Prepare:** Drill both sitting and standing variations consistently. - **Transitions:** Work through different guard transitions to maintain control throughout the technique. - **Defensively Ready:** Be ready to address counters, especially guards and shuffles of breaking posture. The Loop Choke requires practice to ensure tightness and awareness to adjust when the opponent defends. It's a powerful tool when executed from various guard scenarios, offering an unexpected threat to the opponent.
