### Technique: Rear Naked Choke (RNC) The Rear Naked Choke is a powerful submission technique in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) used to incapacitate an opponent by applying pressure to the carotid arteries. This technique is highly effective when executed correctly, often leading to a quick tap out. --- **Position:** - **From:** Back Mount **Japanese Name:** - Jūjime (絞め技), but commonly known worldwide by its English name "Rear Naked Choke." **Step-by-Step Instructions:** **1. Achieving Back Control:** - Start from a dominant back control position. Secure a seat belt grip, with one arm over the opponent's shoulder and the other arm under the opposite armpit. - Use your legs to "hook" the opponent's thighs by placing the insides of your feet into the opponent's inner thigh line to prevent them from escaping. **2. Establishing the Choke:** - With the arm that was over the opponent's shoulder (your choking arm), wrap your arm around their neck until your elbow is directly under their chin. - Ensure your reach deep so that the bicep is snug against one side of their neck and the forearm against the other. **3. Securing the Choke:** - Use the hand of your non-choking arm to grab your bicep of the choking arm. This creates a strong lock with your arms, looking like a figure-four or a "V" shape. - The non-choking hand should then place its palm against the back of the opponent's head. **4. Tightening the Choke:** - Apply pressure by bringing your elbows closer together, ensuring that pressure is applied to both sides of the neck. This should result in the carotid arteries being pressed, restricting blood flow to the brain. - Simultaneously, squeeze your chest forward while pulling their head closer. The synchronized action should feel like a "stick and ball" movement within your arms. **5. Securing While Finishing:** - Keep your shoulder blades squeezed back and ensure your core remains tight, aiding in the strength of the choke. - Keep your head close to theirs, preventing them from trying to pull your arms down to relieve pressure. **6. Finish:** - Hold the squeeze until your opponent taps out or until you sense them going unconscious. Always practice caution! **Important Details:** - Always ensure you have a proper hand position and arm alignment. - If your opponent starts to defend, adjust by hand-fighting, securing underhooks, and keeping them flat on your hooks. - Keep a balance of squeezing and patience to avoid burning out your arms too soon. --- This technique should be practiced with extreme caution and under the supervision of a qualified instructor to ensure safety for both practitioners involved.
