# Technique Description: Triangle Choke
## Overview
The Triangle Choke, also known as Sankaku-jime in Japanese, is a powerful submission technique used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). It employs the practitioner's legs and opponents' shoulder to compress the opponent's carotid arteries, leading to a swift and effective submission.
## Position
**Position:** Closed Guard
**Can also be executed from:**
- Open Guard
- Full Mount
## Steps to Perform the Triangle Choke from Closed Guard:
### Step 1: Set Up
1. **Achieve Closed Guard:**
- Begin with your opponent inside your closed guard.
- Ensure your legs are wrapped around their waist with your feet crossed.
2. **Control the Opponent's Hands:**
- Grab both of your opponent's wrists, positioning them at your chest level.
### Step 2: Break Opponent's Posture
1. **Pull the Opponent’s Head Down:**
- Utilize both of your hands to pull the opponent’s head down, breaking their posture forward.
### Step 3: Creating the Angle for the Choke
1. **Push One Arm In:**
- Choose one of your opponent’s arms, and use your hand to push it and thread it across their body. This arm will be trapped and takes away their ability to defend properly.
2. **Other Arm and Head Control: Now, bring your hips up, moving the opponent's head under your leg on the side of the untrapped arm.**
### Step 4: Executing the Choke
1. **Adjust Angles and Legs Position:**
- Use your other leg to help you pivot your body around, perpendicular to your opponent.
- Your calf should rest on their neck, and your foot should hook under your knee of the opposite leg forming a "triangle."
2. **Lock the Triangle:**
- Hook your opponent's free arm with your own same-side arm, grip your shin, and adjust foot positioning to lock in the "figure-four."
3. **Final Adjustments:**
- Pull your ankle closer to your opponent’s head using both hands.
- Adjust your angle further, tightening the choke.
- Pull down on their head, compressing your legs together while lifting your hips for added pressure, closing the triangle.
### Step 5: Completing the Choke
1. **Squeeze and Pull:**
- Squeeze your thighs together and pull down on their head to tighten the choke.
2. **Monitor the Tap:**
- Continuously apply pressure until your opponent taps out, or if you are in a competitive setting, until the referee intervenes.
## Important Notes:
- **Control:** Throughout the technique, maintain a strong grip and control of your opponent’s arm and head.
- **Safety:** Always respect the tap. Immediately release the choke when your opponent taps.
- **Angle:** Ensure you adjust your body to a perpendicular angle to your opponent; this enhances the effectiveness of the choke.
