### Technique: Seatbelt Grip The Seatbelt Grip is an essential control position used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, especially when transitioning to the Back Mount. It allows for greater control of your opponent and sets up submissions, most notably the Rear Naked Choke. Unfortunately, there is no specific Japanese name recognized for this technique. #### Position: - **Primary Position:** Back Mount - **Secondary Positions:** Turtle, Transition to Back Mount from Side Control #### How to Perform the Seatbelt Grip: 1. **Control from the Back Mount: (Bottom hooks in and Seatbelt Grip)** - **Step 1:** After securing the back position, insert your hooks by placing your feet inside of your opponent's thighs while your opponent is seated or on all fours. - **Step 2:** Reach your top arm over one side of your opponent's shoulder, wrapping it around their chest. - **Step 3:** Bring your bottom arm underneath your opponent's underarm and across the stomach or side. - **Step 4:** Grab your own wrist or hand with the top arm (over the shoulder), securing a tight grip. This should resemble the position of a car seatbelt. - **Step 5:** Keep your elbows tight to the opponent's rib cage to maintain maximum control. - **Step 6:** Use your head to create pressure or as a means to prevent your opponent from escaping by keeping your forehead close or against theirs. 2. **Control from the Turtle Position:** - **Step 1:** Your opponent is on their knees in the turtle position. - **Step 2:** From behind, slip one arm (your overhook arm) over their shoulder, aiming for a tight hold around their chest. This arm should mimic the top arm in the back mount Seatbelt. - **Step 3:** Your other arm (underhook arm) should go under their nearest underarm. - **Step 4:** Create the Seatbelt by gripping your wrist with the arm that is over the shoulder. - **Step 5:** Pull them back or to the side transitioning to gain full back control with hooks. 3. **Transitioning to the Back Mount from Side Control:** - **Step 1:** From side control, move to your opponent's side as they attempt to escape or turn away. - **Step 2:** Slide your knee behind their back, ensuring you're parallel to claim the back position. - **Step 3:** Implement the Seatbelt: overhook arm over the shoulder, underhook beneath their opposite underarm, securing their torso. - **Step 4:** Establish rear hooks by inserting your legs around their hips and thighs. #### Tips for effective use of Seatbelt Grip: - **Maintain tight control** at all times, ensuring your opponent cannot wiggle out. - **Keep elbows tight** to prevent your opponent from breaking the grip. - Use the grip as a **gateway to submissions,** maintaining control as you work for the choke or transitioning to another attack. By mastering the Seatbelt Grip, practitioners can maintain a dominant posture on their opponent's back, setting up for numerous offensive techniques while ensuring defense against escape attempts.
