### **Tai Otoshi**
**Position:** Standing
**Tai Otoshi** is a traditional judo throw that has been incorporated into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) for its effectiveness in transitioning from standing to ground positions. It involves using the body as a lever to off-balance and throw the opponent.
### **Step-by-step Instructions:**
#### 1. **Grip Establishment:**
- **Left Hand:** Grip your opponent's right sleeve, securing it firmly to control their arm.
- **Right Hand:** Position your right arm to grip their left **lapel** or collar. This cross-grip helps dictate the opponent's movements.
#### 2. **Positioning and Kuzushi (Balance Breaking):**
- Step your right foot slightly to the side and front, around the inside of the opponent's right foot.
- Pull firmly with your left hand to break their balance forward.
- Simultaneously, push down and forwards with your right hand to apply pressure and maintain control.
#### 3. **Turning and Pivoting:**
- Begin to pivot your left foot, turning your body slightly to align your hips towards your throwing direction.
- Keep your posture straight, maintaining a strong core for effective leverage.
- Continuously pull with your left hand as you temporarily make space by stretching your arms apart.
#### 4. **Placement of the Right Leg:**
- Extend your right leg straight across the opponent's path while maintaining a slight bend in your knee for firmness.
- The toes of your right foot should point upwards, reducing the risk of injury and preventing you from blocking yourself.
- Use your entire leg to create a firm barrier they cannot pass.
#### 5. **Executing Tai Otoshi:**
- Maintain constant pulling and rotating motions with your hands.
- As your opponent loses their balance, direct their momentum over your outstretched right leg.
- Keep your body low and forward to effectively leverage your opponent's imbalance, driving them to the ground.
#### 6. **Control on the Ground:**
- Once they've fallen, quickly move into a dominant position.
- Securely advance to side control or mount for superior control.
### **Tips for Success:**
- **Timing:** Execute the throw at the moment the opponent's weight is off-balance.
- **Commitment:** Ensure your body follows through completely to maximize the technique's force.
- **Posture and Position:** Maintain strong posture and coherent positioning to execute more efficiently.
- **Safety:** Always practice safely and ensure both you and your partner understand the movements to avoid unnecessary injuries.
Tai Otoshi is a powerful technique that transitions seamlessly into groundwork in BJJ, serving both as a competition tool and valuable training skill.
